Magnitude 5.4 Los Angeles California Earthquake

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

While working on my computer at the 17th floor of a building in Downtown San Diego, I felt the tremors right away and looked outside the window. Since all other buildings were not in close proximity, you cannot see that much the strenght of the sway but my window blind were moving to show that this was undeniably an earthquake in San Diego.

Some group of employees ended up going down the stairs from the 17th floor just to safe just in case there were any after effects. We went to a deli about 3 blocks away and stayed there for a while.

After coming back, I checked the epicenter right away. It was at 33.955 degress North and 117.765 degrees West that registered 5.4 on the Ritcher scale detected by Seismographs from USGS, Caltech, CGS, UCB, UCSD and UNR. The location was about 46 kilimeters away from the LA Civic Center. Read the rest of this entry

Ants Vs. Spider

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

I grew up in another country, and where I came from, small spiders are like toys, where kids get their own spiders and use them in spider competitions. The game is simple, just get a barbecue stick and each player holds one end of the stick. Then a spider is placed on each end. Then we let each spider fight each other and who every falls down the stick first, loses. Another game is with beetles where their hard wing shell is folded up and pinched on one end of a slitted barbecue stick and another on the other end facing each other. They are placed in a lined circle area on the ground, preferably on soil and not concrete and it is like a sumo match. With all these games as kids, we sometimes tend to experiment. And we have done moth larvae versus a spiders where the moth larvae won since it has some stinging hairs. I have also got a moth larva and placed it in a path of red ants just to see who will win this battle and I have seen a moth larva lose to the large volume and group effort of red ants. I remember my wife watching this also as I was curious with the battle that was just happening on the gate of our house. And here is one interesting video, but these are not kids having fun. These are American soldiers spending some time having fun with insects and spiders (a spider is not an insect.) Probably to temporarily take out the loneliness of being away from their family and being sane with the insane war. Below is some specie of spider versus from ants. Although the spider won, these ants are not red ants. They are black ants that are not usually equipped with claws on their mouths. Aside from that, ants have the advantage in numbers and a good communication skills to cal for backup. This is a case of a limited number of ants within a plastic bottle and a very big spider. not really that big, but too big enough for the ants. Well I know this is boring. But it is interesting to me. :)

Orion Meteor Shower

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

I heard over the radio that this weekend is the Orion meteor shower. These meteor showers happen once a year and usually are named after the constellation where it occurs. These meteor showers don’t really look like it is raining meteors, but you may get to see one or two or more shooting stars in a night. Shooting stars are not really stars but small objects like rocks that when are captured by the earth’s gravity and accelerates, they generate enough heat to melt them up and being small, they don’t have the opportunity to even reach the earth’s land or sea surface.

Meteor showers that make more than one occurrence of these shooting stars more than once in a night are usually the fragments of a comet left behind from the path a comet takes. And since these comets have a fixed path, so do their fragments have a fixed location and when the earth passes by this path, this is when we see the meteor showers.

Problem is I do not know where to look. I used to have a software on my computer that shows all constellations in the night sky, but I uninstalled it. I usually ask Mike Lopez who has a telescope at home and knows his constellations well but he was offline. I tried searching, and Google was just not that updated with the current sites talking about the meteor shower. And maybe it is about time to buy my own telescope too. And this brings me to thought of all these other stuff I want to buy, like a night vision cameras and binocular cameras. But maybe I’ll do these next time when I have a house with a big back yard to set things up and will probably get into astronomical photography. I think that would be cool.

Mouths and Exerting Physical Effort

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

I first noticed this from my nephew, Alan Go. My late dad came from a family of 10 brothers and sisters so you can expect me to have cousins that are way older than me. And Alan Go was the son of my older cousins so me and Alan did not really have our ages too far apart. During out BMX years, when fixing bicycles, I noticed Alan when tightening a bolt, or exerting some physical effort, his lips go near to his gums and shows his teeth and the sides of his mouth stretch as if he was going to smile, be he is not smiling. And it is in perfect sync with his physical effort. The more physical effort needed, like when he opens a tight bottle, the more his lips go into that certain position.

I notice this early in other people, and I barely noticed myself, and when I started paying attention to myself, I have another mannerism, where when I exert some physical effort, my lips roll inward and in some occassions, my tongue partially goes out. I also noticed I do not only do this with physical effort, but with mental effort as well like when I am thinking hard on some computer program, or solving whatever PC problem I may have.

When I told this to my wife, she told me about her dad. That his lips keep moving in this certain manner, which I also observed and indeed, it does move when he is exerting some effort.

You think we’re all weird? Well Michael Jordan always takes out his tongue when going for a dunk. Sometimes even just for a lay-up, he takes out his tongue already. We are all weird. :D

Grow Fast

Friday, October 20th, 2006

I remember there was a time when I was riding the MRT which is one of the public transport elevated electrical city trains in the area where I used to go to college. Someone suddenly tapped my shoulder and was asking how I am like he knew me already.

I was still puzzled who I was talking to, until I finally remembered who. He was Alex, who was someone I know from highschool. I was surprised how taller he was and in highschool he was way way smaller, real small. And the big difference was just so great I had no idea who I was talking to at first.

How can someone grow so fast so large? I myself am puzzled, but all I know Alex worked his way to be tall. He was really looking for all remedies that he can do and a friend of ours mention he once accompanied Alex to buy some Chinese growth balls and all these other stuff stretching stuff.

Technology of today is a bit more advanced now. There are known Human Growth Hormones (HGH) such as Sytropin HGH. Sytropin is an advanced blend of HGH, L-group amino acids, and Growth Factors that help you look, feel and perform at your best. This can be purchased without a prescription and has well documented positive results.

So those that want to get a few more inches added to their height that may even simply boost their self esteem, there are many options to do. They do not really just make you grow like magic, they simply enhance the growth process.

Bladder Infections and D-Mannose

Monday, September 4th, 2006

My wife once had UTI, which can be brought about through Cystitis. She was really in pain. What she was feeling was having a hard time urinating and she always had to urinate often which was always painful. With this kind of feeling she started to have a high fever as well and was getting the chills because of the pain in the pelvic area.

Although there are several types of Cystitis, the most common cause is by the bacteria Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. Coli, that when found in the lower gastrointestinal tract, this is where the Cystitis problem starts. Treatment always recommends doctor attention and in most cases of bacterial infection, an antibiotic is prescribed. Although there has been several side effects known with the use of antibiotics, there are some recommended alternatives such as D-Mannose.

There is natural and synthetic D-Mannose and D-Mannose can be naturally found with simple sugar since this is a stereoisomer of Glucose and can be found in small quantities in fruits like cranberries. Although our bodies had D-Mannose, this is abundantly excreted into urine. This is know to work well with bladder infections such as Cystitis, as this can flush out E.Coli. If I have know this when my wife had UTI, I would have recommended this treatment to augment her antibiotic medication. It’s safe and has no known side-effects. And D-Mannose can easily be purchased online.

Disclaimer: I am no doctor and if ever you have Cystitis, UTI or any type of bladder infection, don’t just listen to my advice and take D-Mannose. Consult your doctor and seek their advice.

Summer is Hot

Friday, August 11th, 2006

It is hot. And many times once I get home, and work in my home office, I work with my shirt off. It’s so hot. Whenever there is this heat wave, in zoos, they place big blocks of ice and you can see even desert animals like staying beside the ice and licking it. Some people shed off the hair of other animals to cool them down using Shed Ender. Usually in the belly area that is also in the shade of the sun and not under direct sunlight in most animals.

If you did not watch the video yet and just decided to scroll down, here is more information about it:

Dylan Avery has created a documentary about the 9-11 tragedy and has documented everything very well. I still give the benefit of the doubt, his documentary video may be questionable, but the news and press releases with the known and accepted truth are also questionable. True or not, I believe people should see this video and give it to the viewer to decide for the video about the September 11, 2001 tragedy on four airplane crashes at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and the failed airplane crash heading for the White House.

A few points described well in this video:

  • 7 of 8 black boxes were not found for all plane crashes. Black boxes that record all flight data are stored in heavy titanium that can withstand almost all of the toughest physical damage.
  • Eye witness accounts say that the first plane, American Airlines Flight 11 that hit the World Trade Center did not look like a commercial airplane at all.
  • Videos seems to show an explosion just before impact of the second plane, United Airlines Flight 175, signifying a missle was shot just before impact.
  • The crash at the Pentagon did not seem to be caused by a Boeing 757, American Airlines Flight 77. All it had was a small hole and no damage was caused by the large wings a Boeing 757 has and all lamp post were bent away from the Pentagon.
  • No large debris of a Boeing 757 was found around the Pentagon. All debris were carried by hand.
  • Many airplane parts are made of Titanium that has a melting point of 1,688oC. And high grade jet fuel burns at a maximum of 1,000oC. Many engine parts should be visible even after the crash event.
  • The Pentagon Flight 77 crash engine debris found looked like a single turbo prop engine that experts say came from a JT8D Turbofan Engine from a US Air Force A3 Skywarrior that only a few are flying today.
  • The defuser case found at the Pentagon crash did not have the same defuser case similar to a Boeing 757 of American Airlines Flight 77.
  • The wheel hub found was not consistent with a wheel hub of a Boeing 757 but similar to smaller military aircraft.
  • The damage caused on the Pentagon looks like a cruise missle damage.
  • Eye witnesses tell mixed stories, some saw a commercial airplane, some saw something that did not look like a commercial airplane.
  • A plane looking like a military C-130 was flying right after the so called crash event.
  • The Sheraton Hotel surveillance camera that has the Pentagon in view was confiscated by the FBI, minutes after the attack.
  • Many of the eyewitnesses of the event at the World Trade Center were convinced that there were many explosions after the planes crashed into the World Trade Center. And in the history of many burning buildings, only one aside from the twin towers have collapsed due to internal fire. Signifying that the World Trade Center was demolished using professional controled demolition explosions. The explosions are viewable on tape.
  • The base of the World Trade Center after the event during clean up has shown evidence of molten steel right at the base of the main foundation. As if the bottom was exploded by bombs.
  • The lobby looks like it was exploded by a bomb and exploded even before collapse and the airplane crash happened 94 more floors above.
  • Underwriters Laboratories’ Kevin Ryan wrote a letter to Frank Gail of the of the National Institute of Science and Technology saying that the steel used for the construction of the World Trade Center passed ASTM E119 steel strength quality and it will require 2000oF, and for it to melt and causing the whole tower to collapse will need about 3000oF to melt and cause it to fall. After a few days, Kevin Ryan was fired from his job.
  • Video cameras were not operational during the 9-11 tragedy and bomb sniffing dogs were removed just before the event.
  • The plane that claimed to fail to crash at the White House, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania had almost no debris but a small crater. The victims of the crash claimed to have called through their cellphones. And cellphones are not usable when in flight.
  • Eyewitnesses did not see a commercial plane flying over the Pennsylvania but noticed a different plane that seemed to be a military aircraft minutes before and after the crash event.
  • Video of Osama Bin Laden who claimed to have admitted the crash does not seem to be Osama Bin Laden, FBI files says Osama Bin Laden is left handed. And the video shows Osama Bin Laden writing with his right hand and wears a gold ring and watch.
  • Why some of the alledged hijackers are still alive. Very weird. But the FBI claimed that the actual pilots used falsified papers are not really the actual people.

Dylan Avery ends his video saying:

I know that it is hard to imagine that our own government would murder almost 3,000 innocent people.
But once you begin to accept that possibility, you can no longer go back to the 19 Arabs, or melting trusses or let’s roll. The official story becomes the conspiracy theory. America has been hijacked, not by Al-Qaeda, not by Osama Bin Laden, but by a group of tyrants ready and willing to do whatever it takes to keep their stranglehold on this country. So what are we going to do about it? Are we going to sit down and take it? Or are we going to stand up and fight for what ever little freedoms we have left? The story of flight 93 is a perfect metaphor for the state of this country. A group of heroes willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of the nation. Voted to take matters into their own hands, no matter the consequences. The time has come. Let’s roll.

What’s Wrong with Phenylpropanolamine and Paracetamol?

Thursday, January 5th, 2006

Where is Paracetamol?

When I was in the Philippines last December, I caught a fever, colds and cough. Commonly for anything related to fever and pain relief, Paracetamol is one of the generic drugs that would come to mind for the common Filipino since these are commonly found in the Phillipines. Some of the popular brands are Biogesicâ„¢ and Tempraâ„¢. I still remember old TV commercials of Biogesicâ„¢ promoting that Paracetamol is safe for pregnant women, people with heart ailments and asthma.

But here in the US, after a visit at the drug store… I went through each pain killer of the shelf and of course the most popular known is Aspirin which is like an everyday word. And this is Acetamenophen having one of the most popular brands as Tylenol. Another popular brand is Advil. But I noticed all of the off-the-shelf pain killers were either Acetamenophen or Ibuprofen. I wonder why there is no Paracetamol based pain killers in the US off-the-shelf drugs? Is it because of some policy the US Food and Drug Authority (FDA) that did not allow this but such ruledoes not exist in the policies of the Philippines’ Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD)? In extreme pain, in the Philippines you can also buy Mefanemic Acid pain killers like the popular Ponstan 250.

Phenylpropanolamine

I know Phenylpropanolamine has been banned in large doses since it is used in some rapid weight loss drugs and has several bad side-effects. But in small doses, it is used in medicines for the common colds in the Philippines. Nearly every cold tablet in the Philippines is Phenylpropanolamine, from Neozep to Decolgen, to Ornex to Dimetapp.

And here in the US, not a single cold tablet or syrup uses Phenylpropanolamine. All use Pseudoephedrine. I wonder if the US FDA does not allow to use Phenylpropanolamine even in small amounts why uses that is allowed by the Philippines’ BFAD.

I am a Chemist by profession, but I am not Pharmacist. Generic names are actually nicknames and are not the actual scientific compound names. In chemistry, standardization of naming conventions was done by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and from the names of compounds, you already get to know what it is made of based on the name alone. Some compounds have very long names that pharmaceutical companies make nicknames of the compounds to make the name shorter. Phenylpropanolamine is a good IUPAC name since I know it is nothing but phenol, propanol and an amine group stuck together. Phenol is benzene with a hydroxy group attached to it and benzene is a known carcinogen. I know Phenylpropanolamine has many harmful effects in large doses, but so does anything in large doses. Menthol which is in a bunch of candies and ointments is harmful to some extent, and even the ordinary Luffa is said to be carcinogenic.

Well just wondering why…

All Rough Estimates

Thursday, July 14th, 2005

My daugther’s growing up from toddler to small kid is happening without me. :( And all I get the stories. She has a bump on her head, slightly bruised near the ear and a red swelling nose. My wife told be she fell down the stairs.

These stories really make me uneasy. And I found out she feel from the second to the last step and went down head forward, since her bump is in the middle of her forehead.

While chatting with my Marcia, my wife… I was doing a few rough estimates. Since she fell head first dropping like a log into a slightly diving position, and her feet was like stationary, it was her head that was building up acceleration. I estimated that to be about 3 feet which is 0.9144 meters. And acceleration due to gravity is 9.8m/s2, that means based on my estimate, her head was travelling at 8.96m/s2.

Force is mass multiplied by acceleration. And Marcia said Jamie is 10kg. The head is less than 25% of the total body weight. So I estimate it to be 2kg. That makes the force of impact 89.6 Newtons. And since I rarely use newtons in my life, I can’t even imagine it. I have no reference of how that feels like.

But in contact sports, punches are sometimes measured in pressure with the unit pounds per square inch. Often used in tires which is called PSI. And in sports they simply refer it as pounds. Pressure is force per unit area, and the area is the bump on her head which I estimate to have a 1×1 inch area. But I need metric to used the area with the Newton unit and the pressure is 3527.56kg/m2. Converting that to PSI is 5.02lbs/in2. Ouch! Now I can imagine it more. Having a few references based on experience… a 10 pound bowling ball, and getting half of that, laying on the floor, and having it fall on my head at 3 feet. Ouch.

Poor Jamie, good thing she is still a kid. Things like that are not nice to happen when you are grown up and falls like these also serve as balance lessons as they grow up. I guess everyone of us has a memorable bump on their head as a kid. I have tons of them until college days, mainly form the sports I was into. No wonder I am crazy. :P

Jamie, take care next time. Daddy gets worried being far away. See you all soon Ate and Mommy too.
